New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, in a continued effort to protect the Second Amendment, vetoed two gun-control bills in his state Wednesday, as The Wall Street Journal’s Kate King reported.

The bills were pushed by Democratic lawmakers in the state to implement smart-gun technology and raise standards for handgun permits, but the Republican Governor conditionally vetoed them, the paper reported.

Democratic Assemblyman Gordon Johnson called the vetoes "shameful," according to King.

Christie’s veto recommended ditching the smart-gun initiative and lowering permit standards, because, as he told the paper, New Jersey’s regulations are already "among the most unreasonable and onerous in the country."

Smart-gun technology blocks unauthorized users from firing a weapon, restricting its use to the rightful owner. Gun lobbyists and the NRA have been fighting against this technology, citing the Second Amendment’s right to bear arms.

Christie’s proposed changes in the conditional vetoes would need to be approved by the New Jersey legislature, which is controlled by Democrats, as the WSJ reported.
