Christie: Trump Self-Pardoning Would Lead to Impeachment

(ABC's "This Week")

By    |   Sunday, 03 June 2018 03:57 PM EDT

A president pardoning himself would be a "political problem" that would punch a one-way ticket to impeachment, according to former Gov. Chris Christie, R-N.J., who added "there's no way" President Donald Trump would make that mistake.

"There's no way that'll happen, and the reason it won't is because it then becomes a political problem, George," Christie told ABC's "This Week" host George Stephanopoulos. "If the president were to pardon himself, he'll get impeached."

Christie did admit President Trump has been "executing pardon authority in a more aggressive way than presidents have in the past," but it is not necessarily strategic to send a message to special counsel Robert Mueller.

"I don't think you can read that into it," Christie added. "I think everybody wants to read that into it. I don't think you can."

Christie was referring to the recent pardon of conservative political supporter Dinesh D'Souza and the hints of commuting a sentence of former Gov. Rod Blagojevich, D-Ill., and a potential pardon of TV host Martha Stewart.

"I think this is a president who is not a lawyer, who's never held executive position before: When he sees what he thinks could be injustice, he wants to fix it immediately," Christie said. "That's Donald Trump's personality."

Christie did admit there is "connective tissue" among the aforementioned criminals.

"Let's not forget the connective tissue here: James Comey and [his attorney] Pat Fitzgerald are involved in all the of the things we just talked about," Christie added.
