Critics of President Donald Trump can keep harping on him to release his tax returns all they want, but it won't do any good, says conservative commentator Charles Krauthammer.
"This issue is dead. It's a dead parrot," Krauthammer said Monday on Fox News Channel's "Special Report with Bret Baier."
Several organized rallies over the weekend called on Trump to release his tax returns, as presidents since Jimmy Carter have done, but Trump has repeatedly said he can't until audits are over.
Trump tweeted out in response:
The Federalist senior editor Mollie Hemmingway argued on "Special Report," however, that the issue of Trump's taxes is not over because "people need to understand where money is coming from to determine whether there are conflicts of interest, particularly for someone who had so many conflicts."
It won't happen, though, Hemmingway said, after Rachel Maddow's attempt to show one year of his taxes on her MSNBC program "took the air out of that balloon.
"People saw he was paying taxes, at least that one year at a high-dollar amount, and just I don't think the energy is there anymore," she said.
