Chargers President Fundraising for Rick Perry

Thursday, 03 November 2011 04:22 PM EDT

San Diego Chargers president and chairman Dean Spanos will help lead Texas Gov. Rick Perry's fundraising efforts in California, the campaign said Wednesday. The Perry camp’s announcement described Spanos as someone who has helped the Chargers become "one of the National Football League's most successful and respected franchises,” the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Reaction to the Union-Tribune’s tweet of the news elicited a flurry of responses, including some from Charger fans suggesting Spanos should be focusing on raising money for a new football stadium, which has been the subject of an ongoing controversy in San Diego.

Said @jchargHerSD1: “Spanos needs to worry about running a productive & successful football team before he does anything else.”

Others included on Perry’s California newly announced California finance team include such business and technology leaders as Paul Folino, John Harris, E. Floyd Kvamme, and Mike Tuchin.

"I am honored to have such a strong team of California business and community leaders join my campaign fundraising efforts," said Gov. Perry in a statement. "With their support and hard work, we will run a strong campaign, to spark American job creation, take a wrecking ball to the Washington establishment, cut federal spending and get America working again."

Following the announcement of Perry’s California fundraising team, the Union-Tribune reports, came this curt tweet from fellow presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s California camp @CA4MittRomney: “Disappointing.”
