President-elect Donald Trump in a Christmas Day message urged NHL great Wayne Gretzky to run for prime minister of Canada, a message Gretzky's wife echoed on social media.
Janet Gretzky shared Trump's Truth Social post on her Instagram Stories and posted a link to the comment.
"I just left Wayne Gretzky, 'The Great One' as he is known in Ice Hockey circles. I said, 'Wayne, why don't you run for Prime Minister of Canada, soon to be known as the Governor of Canada — You would win easily, you wouldn't even have to campaign,'" Trump wrote.
"He had no interest, but I think the people of Canada should start a DRAFT WAYNE GRETZKY Movement. It would be so much fun to watch!"
Trump in his post also promised to cut Canadians' taxes if they agreed to become "our 51st state."
The president-elect has been taunting Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for weeks by referring to Canada as a prospective U.S. "state" and the prime minister as its "governor."
Trudeau has faced mounting calls to resign, as Canadians seem fed up with high prices and housing crisis.
Gretzky, 63, who previously endorsed the Conservative Party and former Conservative Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, visited Mar-a-Lago in November following Trump's victory in the presidential election.
He was seen wearing a Mar-a-Lago hat and was joined by his wife and their children, Paulina and Trevor.
