People attending a Joe Biden rally in Detroit on Monday night were offered hand sanitizer as they entered the building, The Hill reported, citing multiple people on the scene.

Members of the media covering the event also were offered the hand sanitizer, as fears of the coronavirus have begun taking over large public gatherings.

The Hill quoted the campaign as saying it plans to "closely follow" guidelines from local and federal health officials regarding "the types of events we hold and how we execute them.

"In contrast with our current president, who not only doesn't amplify the guidance that the experts offer — but directly contradicts it — Vice President Biden and our team will lead by example in following expert advice and complying with reasonable risk mitigations," the campaign said. "At the same time, we will continue to run an aggressive, national campaign to win the Democratic nomination and defeat Donald Trump."

Biden and his rival for the Democratic presidential nomination, Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., have continued to hold public rallies, despite advice from health officials that people should avoid such gatherings to avoid spreading the virus.

Also, older people are especially vulnerable. Biden is 77; Sanders is 78.

President Donald Trump, who also has made no plans to stop holding his large campaign rallies, is 73.
