California voters don't know whom they will vote for in the U.S. Senate race between Democrats, Attorney General Kamala Harris and Orange County Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez.
More of the voters in a USC Dornsife/Los Angeles Times poll said they didn't know and that they prefer either candidate, according to The Los Angeles Times.
The poll asked, "If the election for California senator were being held today among the following candidates, for whom would you vote?"
- Harris: 30 percent
- Sanchez: 16 percent
- I don't know: 36 percent
- Would not vote: 16 percent
- No answer: 2 percent
The race is the first open U.S. Senate in California in 24 years, "and no one seems to care," according to Dan Schnur, director of the Jesse M. Unruh Institute of Politics at USC.
Breaking down the results by party lines showed little interest from Republicans and independents in the two-Democrat race.
- Republicans undecided or would not vote: Three quarters
- Democrats had not decided or wouldn't vote: 29 percent
- Independent voters agreed: Two thirds
"They're two losing candidates to me," Republican voter Jordan Wethe said. If he votes at all, he would vote for Sanchez, because she "seems to be more hawkish on defense issues."
The poll results showed that Harris has more support than Sanchez in every region of California, among men and women. Half of Democrats who took the poll support Harris and 21 percent support Sanchez.
Sanchez has been reaching out to conservative voters, and gained the support of Republican Rep. Darrell Issa.
"For Sanchez to win, she has to be the first candidate in modern political history to put together a Republican, Hispanic coalition. It's not impossible, but it's a very fine line to walk," Schnur said.
President Barack Obama endorsed Kamala Harris in July, the Times reported. Harris is a longtime political ally of the president, according to the Times.
The USC/LA Times poll was conducted in English and Spanish from Sept. 1 to Sept. 8, among 4,212 adults who said they're registered California voters.
