Rep. Blackburn: California Protecting Immigrants Over Citizens

(Fox News' "America's Newsroom")

California's actions to protect immigrants from facing federal authorities is another case of Democrats thinking more about defending them than protecting the rights of U.S. citizens, Rep. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., said Wednesday, and she agrees with the Department of Justice decision to file a lawsuit against the state.

"What they have done in California is basically say to citizens, we're going to take away your right to report people that you think are here illegally or people who are bad actors," the Tennessee Republican, who is campaigning to replace outgoing Sen. Bob Corker, told Fox News' "America's Newsroom." "If you're an employer and you have someone that you think is a bad actor, they're going to take that right away."

She added the nation learned during recent government shutdown that Democrats think more about defending immigrants than citizens, and that is what has happened in California with laws against cooperating with federal agents on detaining immigrants.

"Dealing with sanctuary cities is making sure our citizens are safe," Blackburn said. "We are executing public safety and protecting our citizens. That is what our bills like my Clear Act, the ending sanctuary cities, all the policies are focused on is protecting citizens."

Blackburn noted she has many friends who have immigrated to the United States through legal means, after saving every dollar to pay the fees.

"I thinking it is completely inappropriate for an elected official to say we're going to encourage people to break our laws and come here illegally and put those individuals in the queue ahead of individuals who are seeking to abide by our law and respect the rule of law," Blackburn said. "It's inappropriate and I am relieved to see that there will be action taken to show the federal government is serious about having federal law."
