Newt Gingrich’s run up the presidential polls isn’t just a flash in the pan, says Steven Calabresi, a law professor at Northwestern University and former official in the Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush administrations.
“The Newt boomlet is for real, and he could well be the nominee, as could be Gov. Romney,” Calabresi writes on
Politico.
“Any prospective nominee is going to have things in their record that can be attacked, but none of them will bear the albatross of 9 percent unemployment, a hugely unpopular and unconstitutional health care plan, and trillions of dollars of waster federal spending.”
So any of the top Republican candidates probably will beat Obama, Calabresi says. “Obama has done for the Democratic Party what Herbert Hoover did to Republicans. He inherited a financial problem and through stupid policy choices he made the problem much worse.”
