Cain Supporters Form Super PAC

By    |   Wednesday, 19 October 2011 04:29 PM EDT

Supporters of Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain formed a new super PAC, Americans for Herman Cain, just before the candidates debate Tuesday night. But given the small amount of money that Cain has raised so far, it’s unclear how much punch the new super PAC will have, Politico reports.

A fundraising email went out to tea partyers trumpeting businessman Cain’s “grass-roots support” and rising performance in polls. “It’s our job to propel him to victory in Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, South Carolina, Florida, Michigan and Arizona,” the donation request read.

Direct mail veteran Jordan Gehrke, who worked on Republican Sharron Angle’s failed Nevada Senate bid last year, is campaign director for the super PAC. Donations are coming in to the group’s simple website at a rate “exceeding our expectations,” Gehrke said.

Meanwhile, two new NBC News-Marist polls show Cain holding a narrow lead in South Carolina’s presidential primary and nearly tied with former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney in Florida.

In South Carolina, 30 percent of likely Republican primary voters choose Cain, compared with 26 percent for Romney, 9 percent for Texas Gov. Rick Perry, 6 percent for former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, and 5 percent for Reps. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota and Ron Paul of Texas.

In Florida, Cain leads the way with 32 percent support among likely GOP primary voters, followed by Romney with 31 percent, Perry with 8 percent, and Paul and Gingrich with 6 percent each.
