Rep. Pete Sessions: Will Take Time to Approve All Nominees

President-elect Donald Trump has picked a "great cabinet" that understands its mission and what needs to be accomplished, but it will still take time to get all nominees through the approval process, House Rules Committee Chairman Pete Sessions said Thursday.

"They are going to work with the president, with Congress," the Texas Republican told CNN's "New Day" host Chris Cuomo. "We're going to have, not only a plan, but we're going to sell to the American people the things that we do. No more reading the bill to find out what's in it. No more passing the bill to find out six years later."

Trump's nominees, he continued, are a "very understandable, direct group of people that understands their mission and what we're trying to accomplish. . . . The cabinet is going to be ready, and the American people want progress now."

The major positions need filled first, he continued, but the smaller, less flashy posts will be filled soon as well.

There are a few of the nominees whose positions will need to be researched further, said Sessions, but the "American people need to know we're following the law," even if it extends the process.

He also defended Rep. Tom Price, Trump's nominee to head the Department of Health and Human Services, who has been accused of buying stock in a medical device maker, then introducing legislation to help the company while he was a congressman.

"I know Tom Price," Sessions said of the Georgia Republican lawmaker. "I have known Tom Price for 50 years. He's an above-board, honest, straightforward guy but every single issue must be vetted and looked at, and I'm for that."

Sessions said he also knows Secretary of State nominee Rex Tillerson well, after representing him in Congress.

"He understands the economics of energy better than any other person in the world," Sessions said. "He understands what is above ground, what is underground in Saudi Arabia and Russia. He knows the strengths and the weaknesses. The things that he has done for that company and this country, he will do again. He is brilliant. He is honest, to a fault. And he will be forthright about what he would do. When he draws a red line, he'll mean it, and he will work well and help the president in foreign affairs."

Sessions also spoke about efforts under way to repeal and replace Obamacare, saying Republicans must tell the American people what the plan is to replace the federal healthcare legislation.
