Democratic presidential primary candidate Pete Buttigieg said Sunday an expected Senate acquittal of President Donald Trump will be legitimate despite the controversy swirling around the upper chamber’s refusal to add witnesses in the case.

In an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union,” the former mayor of South Bend, Ind., said, however, it’ll be hard for Republicans to defend the president’s actions to voters.

“[The acquittal] counts by the procedures of the Senate, but not the legitimacy of vindicating the president,” he said “Because it is very hard … even for the Republican senators… for them to look at a voter and say that this president is a good leader for America. “

He said Americans will weigh in on Election Day.

“The Senate is the jury today, but we are the jury tomorrow, and we get to send a message at the ballot box that lying and cheating and involving foreign actors that it is not okay, and we can do better,” he said.

He also argued he’s the fresher face among Democrats running for the White House.

“I have seen vice president [Joe] Biden saying that we cannot afford to take a risk on someone new,” he said. “I believe at a time like this, the risk we cannot take is to return to the same Washington mindset that has brought us to this point and expect it to work against a president like Donald Trump”
