George P. Bush says he supports the effort by Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and other Republicans to defund Obamacare.
"It's a monstrosity of a law," the son of former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush said Wednesday, according to the Dallas Morning News
"In terms of defunding it, that would be one way to reduce and mitigate the impact it's going to have on practicing physicians and hospitals here in Texas."
Bush, a candidate for Texas land commissioner, made the comments shortly after a campaign speech. He has no Republican opposition in the primary and is expected to prevail in the general election next year.
Cruz and other conservative Republicans have vowed to oppose any government spending bill that includes funding for Obamacare, leading some GOP lawmakers to worry that the party could be blamed for a government shutdown if Congress fails to pass a stopgap spending measure by Oct. 1
Bush apparently did not address the question of a government shutdown directly, but said he hopes Congress can halt Obamacare's implementation.
"I agree with this effort to defund it, or keep Texas out of the program unless we can modify it to a Texas-specific solution," he said.
