Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp has brushed off a call for him to resign over allegations his office blocked tens of thousands of voters from registering.
Kemp told the Forsyth County News on Friday the voter suppression claims are "fake news," and a "manufactured story from the Democrats."
The Associated Press first reported more than 53,000 voter registration applications, of which nearly 70 percent were from African-Americans, are stuck in pending status due to minor mistakes or inconsistencies.
His Democratic opponent in the race for Georgia governor, Stacey Abrams, said last week Kemp should resign so Georgia residents can "have confidence that their Secretary of State competently and impartially oversee this election." The Georgia NAACP and other civil rights groups have joined Abrams in calling for Kemp to step down.
"All those people, that 53,000, all they have to do is the same that you have to do and I have to do: walk into their polling location, show their photo ID and go vote," Kemp added. "They're not being held up. We're following state law, and that's a completely bogus lawsuit to get a headline out of D.C. that they can use to gin up their base."
