President Donald Trump's proposed wall on the U.S.-Mexico border "not the right way to proceed," says Sen. Cory Gardner, R-Colo., the chair of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, according to Politico.

"As far as the wall goes, I believe we have to have border security, but I do think billions of dollars on a wall is not the right way to proceed," Gardner reportedly told a constituent at a telephone town hall Wednesday evening. "I don't support a tariff to pay for any kind of wall.

"We do need security on the border," Gardner added.

"That may mean personnel. It may mean a fence. That may mean an electronic fence," the first-term lawmaker said. "But we shouldn't just build a wall and add billions of dollars because that's what somebody said should be done."

Gardner last month said the wall was not "the best idea," according to The Colorado Springs Gazette. He has also voiced his opposition to a 20 percent tariff on Mexican imports to fund the wall.

"A tariff war is a wrong thing to proceed," he said in January, at the Colorado Water Congress convention in Denver, according to the Gazette.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., dismissed the idea of Mexico covering the expense for building the wall, saying "uh, no," when asked during an interview for Politico Playbook.
