Rep. Boehner Angles to Stop GOP Election Rout

By    |   Thursday, 08 May 2008 12:55 PM EDT

Seeking to head off a debacle in the November elections, House Republican leader John Boehner has created a new committee of congressmen to advise the National Republican Congressional Committee.

The 12-member advisory committee was established to coordinate strategy, fundraising and member outreach in specific congressional districts, Politico.com reports.

Several members of the group are already raising money for GOP candidates who are challenging incumbent Democrats.

Fundraising by Republicans has been disappointing following their defeat in the last Congressional elections.

Some Republicans have been questioning the performance of NRCC Chairman Tom Cole since Woody Jenkins lost to Democrat Don Cazayoux in Louisiana’s special election on Saturday, in a House district that had been in GOP hands since 1975.

The new committee aims to bring a fragmented party together for November. A senior Republican aide told Politico:

“The goal is to make sure that when there’s a problem identified in a targeted district, all of the primary sources of political ‘muscle’ in our conference know about it in time to do something to make a difference.”
