President Donald Trump's sudden dismissal of Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has one Democratic senator calling him the "Commander-in-Chaos," The Hill reports.
"President Trump has never understood the critical role that the State Department plays in defining our values and promoting our interests abroad, or in advancing our national security and keeping the American people safe. President Trump has demonstrated yet again that he is the Commander-in-Chaos," Sen. Bob Menendez, a New Jersey Democrat and Senate Foreign Relations Committee ranking member, said Tuesday.
He also slammed Tillerson's "misguided" leadership, and claimed that he left the department in "disarray."
Tillerson will be replaced at State by CIA Director Mike Pompeo.
Menendez' fellow Democrat on Foreign Relations, Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut, said that Tillerson had been a "poor" secretary, but Pompeo will only compound the country's "weakened American diplomacy."
He added that "we should all be alarmed by his ouster because President Trump seems to want someone who does the same thing, only faster and while fawning over the president."
