Rep. Bob Good to Newsmax: GOP in "All the Way' for Jordan

By    |   Tuesday, 17 October 2023 10:18 PM EDT

Rep. Bob Good, R-Va., told Newsmax on Tuesday that he believes Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, is the best candidate to be House speaker and expects Jordan's election Wednesday.

"We are in it all the way for Jim Jordan," Good said on Newsmax's Robb Schmitt Tonight." I think he's the best candidate for speaker, and I think he's going to be elected speaker, hopefully, tomorrow morning. But we'll see how long it takes."

Good highlighted Jordan's increasing support among Republicans.

"Jim got 124 votes the first time, and then he got 155 votes the second time in the conference," Good said. "And then, this third time today [Tuesday] on the House floor, he got 200 votes. So we're certainly making progress. I don't think there's any other Republican that can get 200 votes. Jim is the people's choice. He represents the grassroots."

Good said Jordan represents most Republican voters and should be elected speaker to align with the constituents' desires. Good expressed confusion regarding the opposition to Jordan within the Republican ranks.

"I don't know what their message is," Good said. "I don't know what their reason is. I haven't heard them. Publicly, they won't say why they're against Jim Jordan or why they don't support him.

"I don't know what the argument is against Jim Jordan, especially when 200 Republicans are supporting him. And I'm certain they're all hearing from their constituents, from their voters, from their supporters back in their districts. They need to vote for Jim Jordan."

Good also said Republicans should vote for Jordan because he's the candidate Democrats do not want to face in the House.

"That's not who they want fighting alongside a future Republican president, hopefully, a year from now," Good said.

Good also argued that it would be politically unwise for Republicans to join forces with Democrats in selecting a speaker, emphasizing the need for unity within the party.

"I don't think any Democrats are going to vote for anybody besides Hakeem Jeffries," Good said. "So, I don't think that's a realistic possibility, but it would be political suicide for any Republican to join Democrats in selecting a speaker."

The next speaker vote is expected Wednesday morning.
