Corker: 'Let's Chill' When it Comes to Trump Nomination

(MSNBC "Morning Joe")

Sen. Bob Corker has some advice for people who are saying "never this, never that" when it comes to Donald Trump being the Republican Party's presidential nominee: "Let's chill."

"To me, a much wiser place to be is to let this process play out and to get a much-better sense of what this candidate is going to be espousing, to deal with our nation's huge indebtedness, which is our greatest threat, to deal with the economic issues which are so important," the Tennessee Republican told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" program.

Corker, who chairs the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said that usually candidates lay out their positions, but Trump hasn't done that. Instead, primary voters chose their candidate based on the person they thought could "take on the status quo" and bring policy changes to make their lives better.

"Most people in this country are very unhappy with the direction of the country and how that's affecting their own lives, and so they nominated a person who they believe to be strong," said Corker of Trump. "He's irreverent, taking on the status quo. Now we're entering a second phase. And it began to me with the foreign policy speech that was given last week."

Also, Corker said, the Trump campaign is reaching out to people with expertise and is evolving.

"There's a whole class of people in our country that have had basically stagnant wages for a long, long time," said Corker, and people are concerned about the nation's role in the world.

"I would just say to folks, look, let this play out," said Corker. "Engage. And then when the general election begins, people have a clear contrast hopefully, have a way to make a determination. But to be out there saying things right now, to me is not the place to be."
