Bloomberg Donates Big to Colorado Senators Facing Recall

By    |   Thursday, 29 August 2013 04:35 PM EDT

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has donated $350,000 to support two Democratic Colorado state senators facing recall elections for supporting gun control measures.

Colorado voters will have the opportunity to recall state Senate President John Morse of Colorado Springs and Sen. Angela Giron of Pueblo on Sept. 10 because of their vote for the comprehensive gun control package that Gov. John Hickenlooper signed into law, The Colorado Springs Gazette reported.

Bloomberg's contribution is the largest donation made in the two recall elections so far. Los Angeles philanthropist Eli Broad also gave $250,000. The money was not given directly to the two senators but to Taxpayers for Responsible Democracy, a group that has been campaigning on behalf of Morse and Giron. The group has raised $708,000.

Bloomberg has put millions of dollars of his own money into efforts to pass stricter gun laws and candidates around the country that support them, as well as campaigning against those who do not through the anti-gun violence group Mayors Against Illegal Guns that he helped start.

Pro-Second Amendment groups including the National Rifle Association and the Koch brother's political organization, Americans for Prosperity are backing the recall effort of the two Colorado senators.

The NRA's Institute for Legislative Action has spent $108,667 on mailers, radio advertisements, and billboards in the effort.
