Fed up with years of being ignored within the Democratic National Committee, black Democrats are starting their own groups to operate outside of the committee, BuzzFeed reported.
The rash of new political action committees comes amid new leadership at the top, with new head Tom Perez cleaning house from the inside out.
"For too long, the Democratic Party has told young people of color to take a seat at the table, sit down and shut up. That ends now," Perez told BuzzFeed News. "We need to weave their ideas, their energy, and their leadership into everything we do as a party."
That message was apparently too little, too late for some.
"It's like we're in a bad relationship," Jessica Pierce, the national co-chair of Black Youth Project 100, told BuzzFeed. "They say, 'Hey, we hear you, we're going to change.' Then they do worse. I think this moment is us finally saying, 'This is not working for us.'"
Black operatives think they'll have more impact working from the outside in on fundraising, advocacy and infrastructure, BuzzFeed reported.
However, BuzzFeed reports the black PACs have an ideology that is derived from the Black Lives Matter movement, a slippery slope for a national party that lost the presidential election because it ignored working class whites in middle America, post-mortems showed.
"I would simply caution that a tone that emphasizes race over a message about Democratic values alienates white voters they need to win, and it further plays into this notion of identity politics that the Democrats are trying to get away from," Jarvis Stewart, a veteran Washington-based communications strategist, told BuzzFeed.
