Democratic billionaire Tom Steyer
tells Politico that he plans to target party establishment incumbents in safe districts.
A former hedge fund manager, Steyer opposes the Keystone XL Pipleline in particular and he is urging President Obama to kill the project.
Defeating Keystone would be a key victory.
But that doesn’t sit well with some Democratic operatives, Politico notes. They fear they’ll see the same thing happen to their party as happened to Republicans in 2010 and 2012, when primary challengers backed by outside groups failed to deliver in the general election.
Steyer was planning to host President Barack Obama Wednesday night for a fundraiser at his San Francisco home. Obama is considering whether to approve the pipeline from Canada that two-thirds of Americans support,
according to a recent Pew poll.
The billionaire tells Politico the president will get an earful about the Keystone project from opponents, who will also be at the fundraiser.
