De Blasio: Tax Reform Will Be Difficult Without Trump's Tax Returns

CNN's "New Day"/Twitter

It would be difficult for President Donald Trump to issue policy on tax reform when he will not release his own tax returns, according to New York Mayor Bill de Blasio.

"How can he tell the American people that he wants to change their tax code, without even showing how it affects him?" the Democratic mayor asked Wednesday on CNN's "New Day."

De Blasio pointed out that Trump's business outside of politics made it more important for him to release his returns.

"This president is a businessman with interests around the country and, obviously, exceptional interest in Russia, which is a country that's been very antagonistic to us in many ways. We need to know: does Russia have something over him?

"Is there information in those taxes he doesn't want out because it would lead to controversy, it would compromise him in some way? How can he hold that back from the American people?

"We don't know what he's thinking, who he's serving," the mayor said.

On Tuesday, de Blasio tweeted at Trump: "See, President Trump? It's not that hard," with his own tax returns attached.

The mayor also wrote a blog post Tuesday talking more about tax reform. "President Trump's tax giveaway to the wealthiest among us makes zero sense," he wrote.
