President Donald Trump knew how dangerous the coronavirus disease was as far back as February, but he "knowingly and willingly lied about the threat it posed to the country for months," Democrat presidential nominee Joe Biden said Wednesday in a blistering rebuke after news broke about the president's admissions to the Washington Post's Bob Woodward.

"The president of the United States admitted on tape in February that he knew about COVID-19, that it passed through the air," Biden said at a campaign appearance in Warren, Michigan Wednesday. "He knew how deadly it was. It was more deadly than the flu. He knew and purposely played it down."

Trump told Woodward on Feb. 7, while the coronavirus was spreading worldwide, that it had a higher death rate than the flu and that it "goes through air."

"That's always tougher than the touch," said Trump. "You know, the touch, you don't have to touch things. Right? But the air, you just breathe the air and that's how it's passed."

Trump also was taped saying in March that he had wanted to play down the virus because he didn't want to cause a panic.

"He knew how dangerous it was," Biden said. "While this deadly disease ripped through our nation, he failed to do his job on purpose. It was a life-and-death betrayal of the American people."

Experts have said that if Trump acted one week sooner, 36,000 people would have been saved and if he acted two weeks sooner, 54,000 people would have been spared in March and April alone, said Biden.

"His failure it not only cost lives," said Biden. "It sent our economy into a tailspin. It costs millions more in American livelihoods. This recession is created by Donald Trump's negligence and he is unfit for this job."

Schools remain closed, he said, and parents are abandoned and overwhelmed.

"How many frontline workers are exhausted and pushed to their limits?" said Biden. "How many families are missing loved ones at their dinner table tonight because of his failures? It's beyond despicable. It's a dereliction of duty. It's a disgrace."
