President-elect Joe Biden’s nominee to head the Office of Management and Budget, Neera Tanden, made more than $700,000 during her two years as the head of a liberal nonprofit organization.
Tanden earned $731,528 from the Center for American Progress over the last two years, according to her financial disclosures, along with about $365,000 per year from various investments and speaking fees. She previously worked on the two presidential campaigns of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and in former President Barack Obama’s administration as an adviser to former Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius.
CAP’s 2019 annual report shows that it had a $49.7 million budget at that time.
Some in the Republican Party, such as Arkansas Sen. Tom Cotton, have blasted Tanden’s nomination, saying that “the problem with Neera Tanden is not so much her tweets” criticizing GOP senators, “it’s her radical liberal ideas."
Vice President-elect Kamala Harris defended Tanden on Twitter last month, saying that "Like me, [Tanden] was raised by a single mother and knows firsthand the importance of having an economy that treats all people with dignity and respect. I know with her at the helm of the Office of Management and Budget, our budget will fully reflect our values."
