The Biden administration’s plan to complete construction on a section of border wall falls far short of what the previous administration planned, according to Newsweek.
Congress approved $1.375 billion for additional fencing in the Rio Grande Valley area in 2019. The Trump administration planned to construct new barrier walls at this location and others along more than 500 miles of border land, but by the end of Trump’s term, his administration had completed work on only about 110 miles worth of barrier walls.
Documents approved by Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas show that the construction in Starr County, Texas, should cover one area with “high illegal entry.” It was reportedly the site of almost 300,000 encounters this year up until August, according to Customs and Border Protection data.
Newsweek notes that neither Trump nor Biden approved barriers along the entire US-Mexico border, which is almost 2,000 miles long.
