Underdog Democratic presidential contender Sen. Bernie Sanders topped an online poll for Time magazine's 2015  "person of the year" — beating out President Barack Obama, Pope Francis and Pakistani girls' education activist Malala Yousafzai.

The Vermont lawmaker won with 10.2 percent when voting stopped at midnight Sunday, Time reports.

Rounding out the top five were trailers:
  • Yousafzai: 5.2 percent
  • Pope Francis — Times' 2013 Person of the Year: 3.7 percent
  • Obama: 3.5 percent
  • Talk-show host Stephen Colbert: 3.1 percent
The two front-runners for the White House, GOP presidential contender Donald Trump and Democratic primary front-runner Hillary Clinton finished with a dismal 1.8 percent and 1.4 percent respectively.

Sanders is running 20 percentage points behind Clinton in the primary race, according to an average of national polling by Real Clear Politics.

Time's editors will reveal their selection for the award during Wednesday morning's broadcast of NBC's "Today" show.
