Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., had more donors to his presidential campaign than any other running for the Democratic nomination, and came into 2020 with $18 million, more from donors than any other candidate, The Washington Post reports.
The newspaper analyzed campaign finance records along with data from ActBlue, which processes donations for Democrats. The data shows Sanders had about 1.38 million unique donors in 2019, and that 85% of his donors did not give to any other current Democratic candidates. The Post notes that many Sanders donors make small recurring payments that gradually add up.
The median donor to the Sanders campaign lived in zip code with the lowest median household income level of the top Democratic candidates. About 81% of Sanders donations came from neighborhoods where most residents are white, the second-lowest after entrepreneur Andrew Yang.
Sanders experienced a sharp spike in new donors at the end of 2019, a burst in the hundreds of thousands that left him far above the candidate with the second-highest number of individual donors, Massachusetts Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who had about 884,000 last year. The Warren campaign announced on Saturday that it has reached one million individual donors, according to The Hill.
