President Donald Trump will not get re-elected in 2020, according to Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, citing Trump's controversial policies as the reason for the president's low approval ratings.
"In terms of the first three months in office, Donald Trump is the least popular president in the history of polling," he told the Associated Press Wednesday.
Trump's average approval rating, according to RealClearPolitics, has not risen above 46 percent. FiveThirtyEight's Nate Silver reported in 2011 that "the approval rating at which an incumbent candidate goes from being an underdog to a favorite for re-election is somewhere in the high 40s."
Sanders singled out Trump's support for the failed Republican health care bill, his support for tax cuts to the wealthy and budget cuts to programs that help the poor, as the reasons for his unpopularity.
"I do not believe that if Trump continues these policies that he's going to be re-elected," he said. "Nor do I think that the Republicans are going to do well in 2018. The momentum right now is with the progressive movement in this country. And I think the Republicans are on the defensive and will be on the defensive increasingly."
