Lieberman to Congress: Focus on Security, Not Storylines

By    |   Sunday, 18 November 2012 02:27 PM EST

The political focus on the way the terrorist attacks in Benghazi were described to the public should not be the focus of ongoing congressional investigations into the incident, Sen. Joe Lieberman, I-Conn., said on “Fox News Sunday.”

Lieberman, chairman of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, said “I don’t find anything inconsistent” between the statements made by the intelligence community and the public address given by U.S. Ambassador Susan Rice in the days following the Sept. 11 incident.

“I must tell you that I think we’re focusing on questions that are not insignificant, but they’re not the most significant,” he said. “Of course there was a terrorist attack.”

He said the more important issue is the administration’s willingness to employ diplomats at a U.S. Consulate that was so poorly protected and secured.

“In my opinion, it was irresponsible to have our State Department personnel there with only three security guards,” Lieberman said. “They were easily overrun in the attack of Sept. 11. There was no capacity to defend our personnel in a timely way once the attack occurred, and we can’t let that happen again.”
