U.S. Rep. Ben Cline, R-Va., told Newsmax on Tuesday that Republican lawmakers are determined not to pass a supplemental aid package for Ukraine without concession from President Joe Biden and Democrats on securing the southern U.S. border.
“We are drawing a line in the sand that we will not allow any aid to Ukraine because we have a border here at home that we have to protect,” Cline told “The Chris Salcedo Show.” “We want to support our friends in Ukraine, but we're not willing to send the dollars of hardworking American taxpayers when we aren't willing to defend our own borders.”
Negotiations are ongoing in the Senate for an aid package as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visits Washington to lobby lawmakers.
Cline, a member of the House Judiciary, Appropriations and Budget committees, said Biden and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., “have allowed this crisis on our border to worsen to the point where we have people on terrorist watch lists sneaking across the border.”
He said 8 million people have crossed the border illegally during Biden’s presidency, which is slightly lower than the population of Virginia, his home state.
“Just imagine how this number is affecting law enforcement, schools, roads, public transportation, housing,” Cline said. “It's affecting all across our country. We have a nation in crisis, and we have to address our border.”
