Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson told an audience in Atlanta he sometimes disagrees with President Donald Trump following reports the president used a derogatory term to describe African nations, The Hill reports.
"I'm a member of this administration, and I don't agree with the president about everything that he says, or of how it is said," Carson said while speaking at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, Ga., during a service honoring the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.
"If the way you say things is so inflammatory that people can't hear your message, it is not helpful. And that is why I don't do that anymore. I pray that God takes that spirit away from me and gives me the spirit of love," he added.
Trump's supposed incendiary remarks happened during a meeting on immigration last week. The president has denied describing several nations as "sh**hole countries," but lawmakers who were present have given differing accounts.
"Never said anything derogatory about Haitians other than Haiti is, obviously, a very poor and troubled country. Never said 'take them out.' Made up by Dems," Trump tweeted last week.
"Senator Dicky Durbin totally misrepresented what was said at the DACA meeting. Deals can't get made when there is no trust! Durbin blew DACA and is hurting our military," he added.
