Sen. Barrasso: Biden 'Asleep' on Border Crisis

By    |   Thursday, 05 October 2023 11:24 AM EDT

John Barrasso, R-Wyo., chairman of the Senate Republican Conference, took aim at Joe Biden's border policies, accusing the president of being "asleep at the switch" while thousands of Americans are "dying by the trainloads" from fentanyl.

Barrasso released the video statement Wednesday afternoon, hours before the Biden administration announced that it would resume Texas border wall construction — something Republicans have long advocated for since Biden put an end to it on the first day of taking office in January 2021.

"Joe Biden's border policy has been one train wreck after another," Barrasso said. "The reason I say train wreck is that the number of Americans who have died from fentanyl — since Joe Biden has been president — equals the number of people if you take an Amtrak train, fill it with people, crash the train, everyone dies every other day. That's the number of people in America being killed by fentanyl."

Barrasso pushed the Senate's "Secure the Border Act," a bill introduced last month as the upper chamber's companion to HR2, which passed in the House in May.

"Republicans have solutions. It's the Secure the Border Act. Thirty of us have co-sponsored it. It secures the border from illegal immigrants and deadly drugs," Barrasso added.

"Now you know when a train crashes they often say that the engineer was asleep at the switch. Well, Sleepy Joe Biden, he's been asleep at the switch, and people all across America are dying by the trainloads."

Biden used executive action to restart the construction, just as he did on Jan. 20, 2021, when he put an end to what former President Donald Trump had started, stating then that "building a massive wall that spans the entire southern border is not a serious policy solution."

Biden's move wasn't lost on Trump.

"Will Joe Biden apologize to me and America for taking so long to get moving, and allowing our country to be flooded with 15 million illegals immigrants, from places unknown. I will await his apology!" Trump wrote Thursday on social media.
