Poll: Ayotte Losing Support After Nixing Background Checks

Poll: Ayotte Losing Support After Nixing Background Checks

According to a new poll, support for Sen. Kelly Ayotte, R-N.H., has slipped due to her vote against a gun control bill last week, the Hill reports.

The survey, taken by the Democratic firm Public Policy Polling, shows that 50 percent of respondents would be less likely to support her for re-election due to her vote against the expansion of background checks.

About a quarter of respondents said her vote made them more likely to support her, and another quarter said it would have no impact on their support.

Seventy-nine percent of Democrats said it made them less likely to support her, while 50 percent of independents and 17 percent of Republicans said the same.

Ayotte's erosion of support among independents could become a major problem in her 2006 re-election bid, as a plurality of New Hampshire voters declare no party affiliation.

The last PPP poll of New Hampshire, taken in October, showed centrists were divided on Ayotte, with 41 percent approving and 40 percent disapproving of her job performance.

The perception of Ayotte among centrists has fallen sharply, with only 30 percent approving and 61 percent disapproving.

Generally speaking, respondents were split on Ayotte, with 44 percent approving of her job performance and 46 percent disapproving.

The results of the poll provide the first clear indication that a blue-state Republican could possibly see electoral ramifications for voting against gun control.

The poll was conducted among 933 New Hampshire voters from April 19-21, and has a margin of error of 3.2 percentage points.
