House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., came to the defense of Attorney General Jeff Sessions and said President Trump should not fire him, the Washington Examiner reported.

"I think it is in the president's interest that he stays where he is and that he continues and does his job," Ryan said of Sessions on Thursday.

Earlier this week, Ryan had said it was entirely up the president to decide Sessions' future, USA Today noted.

Trump has repeatedly slammed Sessions amid speculation he was preparing to fire him.

In a New York Times' interview last week, Trump said he would never have appointed Sessions in the first place had he known the attorney general would recuse himself from the Russia investigation.

A number of Republicans, who served with Sessions for years on Capitol Hill, are backing the attorney general, NBC News reported.

"If Jeff Sessions is fired, there will be holy hell to pay," Sen. Lindsay Graham, R-S.C., said.

Meanwhile, Ryan also threw his support behind White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus after communications director Anthony Scaramucci appeared to accuse him of leaking information to the media, the Examiner said.

"Reince is doing a fantastic job, and I believe he has the president's full confidence," Ryan said.
