Democratic Super PAC Plans Massive ‘Dirt’ Attack on Romney

By    |   Wednesday, 23 May 2012 01:00 PM EDT

A Democrat Super PAC is getting significant funding to dig up dirt and create dossiers on presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney and GOP congressional candidates.

Unlike other well-funded PACS that focus on messaging via TV and radio, the Democrat-backed American Bridge 21st Century plans a massive personal assault on Republicans by “uncovering an unguarded moment, a controversial position, a gaffe or flip-flop, anything that can be used to torpedo a political foe’s campaign,” USA Today reports.

According to the newspaper, the "dossier" on Mitt Romney includes 2,500 pages.

Democratic operative David Brock launched the Super PAC in November 2010, and full-time staffers now number 50.

The “research hub for liberal groups” uses the unlimited stream of money that can be handed over to PACs to “build a research operation that runs independently of the candidates they support,” the paper observed.

American Bridge collected $5.7 million from Jan. 1, 2011, to March 31 of this year, according to Federal Election Commission filings. Billionaire financier George Soros has contributed $1 million to the PAC.

The group has sent out 17 “trackers” with high-definition cameras to Senate and presidential battleground states to capture candidates’ every off-the-cuff statement and interaction with voters. They have compiled 1,300 hours of video to help researchers find potentially damaging material to post on Twitter and YouTube or turn over to other Democratic operatives for attack ads in the media.

Back at the PAC’s Washington, D.C., headquarters, 25 researchers “have compiled dossiers, hundreds of pages long, on the Republican congressional candidates they are targeting,” USA Today disclosed.

In one typical posting, following Richard Mourdock’s victory over incumbent Richard Lugar in the May 8 GOP Senate primary in Indiana, the group reported: “American Bridge 21st Century released a video calling attention to Richard Mourdock’s long history of fighting to eliminate Indiana jobs. As Mourdock himself said, he was the ‘sole person’ fighting the auto rescue plan that saved thousands of Hoosier jobs, and even said he’d be fine with Chrysler being forced to liquidate their assets.”

In the “Who We Are” section of the PAC’s website, American Bridge states: “American Bridge 21st Century is a progressive research and communications organization committed to holding Republicans accountable for their words and actions and helping you ascertain when Republican candidates are pretending to be something they’re not.”

More specifically, the group’s president, former Harry Reid aide Rodell Mollineau, reportedly said American Bridge’s goal is to construct an “unflattering narrative” about Romney and other Republican candidates and “move the needle one or two points in Ohio or Virginia” or other crucial states.
