Arkansas' Pryor: 'No One From New York Tells Me What to Do'

By    |   Friday, 31 May 2013 11:01 AM EDT

Arkansas Sen. Mark Pryor has hit back at New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg for targeting him for voting against gun control.

In a new ad, the Fayetteville-born Democrat, seen as one of his party's most vulnerable in the 2014 elections, insists he won't take orders from people who hail from the big cities.

Story continues below video.

He concludes his ad -- the first of his campaign -- with the words, "I approve this message because no one from New York or Washington tells me what to do. I listen to Arkansas."

The two-term senator says, "The mayor of New York City is running ads against me because I oppose President Obama's gun control legislation."

He then continues, "Nothing in the Obama plan would have prevented tragedies like Newtown, Aurora, Tucson. ... I'm committed to finding real solutions to gun violence while protecting our Second Amendment rights."

Bloomberg's group, Mayors Against Illegal Guns, has purchased $350,000 worth of TV ads excoriating Pryor for his gun-control vote.

Republicans did not field a challenger to Pryor in 2006. Pressure is building for freshman Rep. Tom Cotton to challenge next year. Others who have been mentioned as possible candidates are Rep. Steve Womack and Lt. Gov. Mark Darr.
