The Louisiana police officer who joked Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y. should be shot has been fired, CBS News reports.

A fellow officer who reportedly liked the post has also been fired.

Charlie Rispoli, who was on the Gretna police force since 2005, made the since-deleted comment on Facebook in a reference to Ocasio-Cortez's past work as a bartender.

"This vile idiot needs a round . . . and I don't mean the kind she used to serve," he wrote.

Gretna police chief Arthur Lawson called the post "disturbing" and Monday said Rispoli and Angela Varisco, the other officer, were fired.

Lawson called the incident "an embarrassment to our department."

"These officers certainly acted in a manner which was unprofessional alluding to a violent act to be conducted against a sitting U.S. congressman," he said.

Rispoli's post included a link to a fake story from Taters Gonna Tate titled, "Ocasio-Cortez on the Budget: 'We Pay Soldiers Too Much.'"

Rep. Ocasio-Cortez has become a target for President Donald Trump and his supporters, and in mid-July was the subject of racist and sexist memes posted in a private Facebook group that consists of around 9,500 Customs and Border Patrol officers.
