President Donald Trump's comment calling for law enforcement to ignore due process and confiscate guns from dangerous people will "animate" gun owners and the NRA to work against him, according to Fox News analyst Andrew Napolitano.
"I like taking the guns early, like in this crazy man's case that just took place in Florida ... to go to court would have taken a long time," Trump said in a bipartisan meeting on school safety and gun violence. "Take the guns first, go through due process second.
"That statement will really animate the gun owners of the country and the NRA against him, because this is exactly what they fear most: confiscation first, trial later," Napolitano said on "Outnumbered" Thursday. He questioned whether Trump might have been thinking out loud or taking an extreme position for negotiations.
Political commentator Maria Harf then pointed out that "If Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton had said, 'We're gonna take your guns and then go through due process' ... it's hard to fathom the amount of outrage that would be there."
NRA spokeswoman Dana Loesch blasted Trump for the remark in an appearance on Fox News Wednesday, saying that Trump "must respect and protect the rights of law-abiding Americans all across the country who right now being punished for the failures of government."
