Recently fired FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe led a criminal investigation of Attorney General Jeff Sessions last year, according to a new report.

ABC News reported Wednesday that McCabe directed the probe that began in the months after Sessions testified on Capitol Hill for his confirmation hearing. Democrats accused Sessions of not being entirely truthful during his testimony in regards to contacts he had with Russians during the 2016 presidential campaign.

The FBI investigation was launched to determine whether or not Sessions had intentionally left out information during the confirmation process, and McCabe was reportedly in charge of it. It was jumpstarted after Sens. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., and Al Franken, D-Minn., asked the FBI to look at whether Sessions broke the law by originally omitting details about meetings he had with Russians.

The investigation was eventually closed after Sessions was found to have done nothing wrong.

ABC noted that Sessions did not know about the investigation when he fired McCabe last Friday night. The network did, however, confirm that multiple Republicans and Democrats on Capitol Hill were informed of the investigation last year by McCabe and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

McCabe was due to officially retire from the FBI on Sunday. His dismissal came following an official recommendation to let him go because he was found not to have been fully truthful when asked about leaks within the FBI.
