New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo called for the resignation of the state's top legal officer, Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, in the wake of a report multiple women have alleged he was physically abusive.
"No one is above the law," the governor said in statement tweeted out Monday night.
Schneiderman announced his resignation amid the allegations of four women later Monday night.
"My personal opinion is that, given the damning pattern of facts and corroboration laid out in the article, I do not believe it is possible for Eric Schneiderman to continue to serve as Attorney General, and for the good of the office, he should resign," Cuomo's statement read.
Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., also called for his resignation Monday night.
"The violent actions described by multiple women in this story are abhorrent," her statement declared, The Hill reported. "Based on this extensive and serious reporting, I do not believe that Eric Schneiderman should continue to serve as attorney general."
According to the explosive report by The New Yorker, four women who were romantically involved with Schneiderman alleged he was physically violent. Two of the women spoke on the record, saying Schneiderman repeatedly hit them during their relationships; neither filed any police complaints but sought medical attention and confided in people close them about the abuse, according to the report.
