Attorney General William Barr has "shown a complete disrespect for the law" both by not showing up for a House Judiciary Committee hearing last week and for how he answered questions posed for him by the Senate Judiciary Committee, Sen. Amy Klobuchar, who sits on that committee, said Friday.
"We have equal branches of government," the Minnesota Democrat and presidential candidate told MSNBC's "Morning Joe." "We have the right to issue these subpoenas, and when they don't show up for the subpoenas, then they're violating the law."
Democrats control the House, she pointed out, and it has the "power of the purse" over the administration. Further, voters showed in the last election that they wanted checks and balances on President Donald Trump because "they didn't want him doing unlawful things," but instead wanted "someone in the White House who can tell the truth and obey the law."
Congress must also hear from special counsel Bob Mueller, particularly because of concerns over Russian meddling in the 2016 election, said Klobuchar.
"They didn't use tanks or missiles" but still they used misformation and hacked into the computer systems for Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, said Klobuchar. "People know we're supposed to have this say in our democracy, not a foreign government."
Klobuchar also discussed her campaign, saying she's not concerned that men are dominating the early part of the race.
“You look in places like New Hampshire and Iowa the three women are usually in the top eight candidates, three of us,” Klobuchar countered. “We may not be at the top but that's pretty significant when you look at the entire field of 20-some people.”
