Newt Gingrich: Exposing 'Squad' Congresswomen Benefits Trump

By    |   Monday, 15 July 2019 01:02 PM EDT

President Donald Trump wants to see far-left Democrats like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez become the "front page" of their party, so he thinks that anything he does that brings attention to them "is to his net advantage," former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Monday while responding to the president's tweets attacking them.

"I think the president believes the more he gets the country to look at the so-called squad, the more he gets them to realize how radical they are and how fundamentally radical their views are, the more positive he is," Gingrich told Fox News' "Fox and Friends."

It's "reasonable" for Americans to be getting angry, he added, pointing to weekend events at a migrant detention center, where "1,000 people in Aurora, Colorado, attacking an American building, tearing down the American flag. It is reasonable for the average American to get pretty angry. This helps elect Trump."

Gingrich on Monday also discussed former Vice President Joe Biden's release of a healthcare plan to expand on Obamacare, calling it "pretty smart" of him to stay aligned during his 2020 presidential campaign with former President Barack Obama and away from other Democrats calling for Medicare for All plans.

"Inside the party, the legacy of President Obama is still very large," said Gingrich. "He has to say 'look, I'm not as crazy as these people.' I think by being in favor of an expanded Obamacare he draws a pretty clever line."

Biden also represents a "real challenge" to far-left candidates, he added, and in the end, "They will realize if they don't find a way to slow down Biden, he will be the nominee. He has managed to do a number of really destructive things and he's still the front-runner."
