Alan Dershowitz to Newsmax TV: Never Said Trump Can Do Anything He Wants

(Newsmax TV's "The Chris Salcedo Show")

By    |   Thursday, 30 January 2020 08:00 PM EST

Harvard Law Professor Alan Dershowitz told Newsmax TV on Thursday that claims being made that his defense of President Donald Trump means he believes the president is able to do anything he wants is "completely false."

"I never said anything like the president can do anything he wants," Dershowitz told "The Chris Salcedo Show." "I would approve of the impeachment of Richard Nixon; he committed crimes. And I would approve for any president who committed crimes in the name of trying to get re-elected."

However, he said, the House did not charge Trump with committing crimes for any reason "whatsoever."

Dershowitz testified to the Senate on Wednesday, the quid pro quo charges at the heart of the president's impeachment, claiming he withheld military aid to Ukraine in exchange for political favors, could not be grounds for impeachment, even if they are proven.

He also discussed the dust-up that happened on ABC's "The View" after show co-host Whoopi Goldberg repeatedly cut him off when he tried to explain why Trump should stay in office. He said he did not delve deeply into allegations, but was happy to get his point across.

But, as for the claims concerning his defense, Dershowitz compared the matter to that of late President Abraham Lincoln, who famously sent troops off the battlefield during Civil War back to Indiana, so they could vote for him and other Republicans in the election.

"That's what politicians do all the time," said Dershowitz, rejecting the idea that the political activity should be considered a crime.

Further, he said it is important to examine the potential corruption of a presidential candidate, such as Vice President Joe Biden.

"We really, really have to look into the corruption if he just was a former vice president and his son is doing things in Ukraine," Dershowitz said. "That's one thing. But if he could be the president of the United States, that's a better reason for why we need to look into whether there is any corruption."
