Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange will be named to succeed Jeff Sessions in the Senate after Sessions' confirmation as U.S. attorney general on Wednesday, Politico reports.

The website, citing Republican sources, said Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley will make the announcement Thursday morning in the state capital of Montgomery.

Alabama Republicans had tried in the past 24 hours to convince Bentley to appoint someone else since Strange's office is believed to be currently investigating the governor over a sex scandal.

Bentley, however, declined to change his mind.

Strange was first elected attorney general in 2010, running ads referring to himself as "Big Luther" because he stands 6-foot-11 and poking fun at his last name.

Sessions announced in a speech on the Senate floor Wednesday night after his confirmation vote he would be resigning his Senate seat at 11:55 p.m.
