It was no surprise that Democrat House Members would call for the censure of Rep. Mo Brooks, R-Ala., for his hard-edged remarks to Trump supporters in Washington D.C. just before the assault on the Capitol Jan. 6.
But it was surprising on Monday afternoon to see the top Republican in Brooks’ home state of Alabama calling for a primary challenge to the six-term congressman.
“'He does not speak for all Republicans — much less all Alabamians,” Republican Gov. Kay Ivey told reporters.
Ivey went on to suggest that Brooks deserved a primary challenge next year for working up protestors in Washington Jan. 6 just before they broke into the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to thwart the certification of the electoral votes from each state.
At the rally of Trump backers in Washington, Brooks declared: “[T]oday is the day American patriots start taking down names and kicking ass.”
If the people of Brooks’ 5th District (Huntsville) feel their views are not properly represented, Ivey told reporters, “they need to express their disappointment directly to Rep. Brooks and, if necessary, hold him accountable at the ballot box.”
As to whether the governor and other leaders of the Republican establishment can recruit a primary challenger to Brooks remains to be seen.
As engineer Shaun McCutcheon, veteran conservative activist and a Republican-turned-Libertarian, told Newsmax, “Mo Brooks is overwhelmingly fine with the grass roots of Alabama. Many people have come to me with concerns even though I’m out of GOP for three years and want nothing to do with it.”
Brooks’ fiery remarks have come under attack from Democrat Reps. Tom Malinowski, N.J., and Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Fla. Both lawmakers introduced a resolution to formally censure Brooks and Rep. Louie Gohmert, R-Texas, for their orations on on Jan. 6.
