The Rev. Al Sharpton says America is a powder keg that could explode at any moment — and the civil-rights leader blames President Donald Trump for stoking the dangerous atmosphere.

"We're in a poisonous atmosphere that is being increased by the president of the United States. It's like turning on the gas in a room," Rev. Al Sharpton told reporter Edward-Isaac Dovere on Politico's Off Message podcast.

"Any match could lead to an explosion, and we're getting that kind of atmosphere from this president … He's getting further and further and further away from being able to change his own narrative."

Sharpton said he believes Trump has "empowered" anti-Semites and racists.

"I think he has brought them from the shadows into the mainstream and I think he's emboldened them, and I think that's a dangerous course for the country," Sharpton said.

Sharpton's comments come a week after Trump doubled down on his original comments about the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia where white nationalists clashed with counter-protestors, saying that "many sides" were to blame for the deadly rally that resulted in three deaths and at least 34 injuries.
