Rape Victim, Immigrant In Ad: Akin Supports Freedom

By    |   Thursday, 01 November 2012 05:17 PM EDT

Flush with cash after the state party and outside groups bought up TV advertising time, Todd Akin Thursday released an ad featuring a rape victim who had an abortion and Russian immigrant expressing support for his efforts to protect freedom, Politico reports.

The 30-second ad does not specifically refer to Akin’s views on abortion, or his controversial statement in August about the female body’s ability to fend off pregnancy in the event of rape, but implies it as part of the broader goal message that he’s a good man.

One of the two women in the ad, Kelly Burrell, explains that she is a mother of two who was raped and had an abortion. In the 30-second version, she does not make reference to any regret about the decision or her feelings on legal abortion.

In a longer, 60-second version, however, Burrell quotes the Declaration of Independence to express her feeling that ending a pregnancy by getting an abortion is wrong.

“Our Declaration [of Independence] states that everybody has a right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness,” Burrell says. “You can’t pursue happiness if you don’t get born. And Todd understands that and he fights for the unborn.”

A Russian immigrant named Zoya also appears in the ad. She says she moved to the U.S. when she was 12 and does not want to lose the freedoms she gained in America and would not get if she was still living in Russia.

"I know Congressman Todd Akin knows what government's job is, that is to protect life, not to control life like they did in Russia," Zoya says in the ad. "The reason why I'm supporting Todd Akin is because I love this nation. I love my freedoms. I don't want to lose my freedoms."
