Former American Idol runner-up Clay Aiken is considering a run for Congress in his home state of North Carolina against incumbent Republican Rep. Renee Ellmers.
The 35-year-old singer from Raleigh has consulted with Democratic political operatives and strategists in Washington and North Carolina,
the Washington Blade is reporting.
A source told the Blade the openly-gay singer is "actively considering" a run for the 2nd district seat and that he is "sounding and acting like a candidate."
Aiken has reportedly talked to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and is working with Betsy Conti, a political strategist in Raleigh.
He has until Feb. 28 to make his decision. That's the filing deadline to qualify for the May 6 primary ballot.
Former North Carolina Commerce Secretary Keith Crisco, a Democrat, is expected to announce Monday that he intends to enter the primary race.
