House Intelligence Committee Vice Chairman Adam Schiff tweeted Thursday that the Justice Department inspector general's scathing report on the FBI and the Hillary Clinton probe provided "no vindication for the president."
In an earlier statement, Schiff defended the FBI, saying the agency's "decisions were made on the basis of the facts and the law."
Inspector General Michael Horowitz's report "found no evidence that former FBI Director James Comey and other FBI and DOJ officials acted on the basis of political bias or other improper considerations," Schiff said.
But the congressman did use the report to slam Republicans who have been seeking Justice Department documents on Russia special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation.
"If anything, the report only highlights the impropriety of sharing information on pending investigations with Congress in a manner that is likely to be made public, an ongoing concern given Republican attempts to obtain information about the Russia investigation that can be utilized by the president's lawyers and surrogates," he said.
In his 500-page report, Horowitz did not address the origins of the Moscow probe or any possible collusion with the Trump campaign.
He did, however, find that former FBI Director James Comey was "insubordinate" in handling the Hillary Clinton email investigation, though it was not motivated by politics, and that five FBI officials were biased toward Republican candidate Donald Trump.
Those officials, Horowitz said, were referred to the FBI for possible disciplinary action.
In addition, another top Democrat, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York, said on Twitter that the IG's report confirmed Mueller's inquiry was "anything other than independent, impartial and just as important today as it was before this report was issued."
